Saturday, November 6 is THE DAY for Brunswick Stew fans! More than a dozen stewmasters will stir up vats of their best recipes, and offer samples for $1 each. The festival is free, unless you sample ($1) or decide you’d like to try a bowl ($4 to $6).
17th Street Farmers’ Market is the place, 17th and East Main Streets in Richmond’s downtown. Of course there’s music and handmade and vintage items for sale as well. Hours 11 AM til 3 PM!
Recipes for Brunswick stew vary greatly but it is usually a tomato-based stew containing various types of lima beans/butter beans, corn, okra, and other vegetables, and one or more types of meat. Most recipes claiming authenticity call for squirrel or rabbit meat, but chicken, pork, and beef are also common ingredients. Some versions have a distinctly smoky taste. TRaditionally, Brunswick Stew is thick enough to hold a paddle upright in the middle of a pot – so it’s thick and hearty!
The 17th Street Farmers’ Market is located in Richmond’s downtown, our bed and breakfast, Richmond’s premier inn, is downtown – in Richmond’s historic Fan District. Don’t miss this opportunity for distinctly southern fare and a Richmond tradition in its 11th year!
