The University of Richmond Modlin Center hosts the Legacy Tour of Merce Cunningham on January 31 and February 1.

After his death in July 2009, the dance company founded by Merce Cunningham, one of the most important choreographers of our time, embarked on a legacy plan for a final two-year international tour.  The company will disband at the conclusion of the tour.

The tour is a celebration of Cunningham’s artistic achievement and showcases work from his entire career performed by the company that he personally trained. Cunningham redefined contemporary dance through his approach to time, space, and technology in a radical manner. Throughout his career, he refined his language of movement by highlighting the body’s inherent drama and capacity to change.  TICKETS.

And, on Monday, January 31, if you play your cards right and act quickly, you just might get a ticket to Ellwood’s Cafe Monthly Wine Down beginning at 6 PM. Tickets may be purchased at the Cafe or at Ellwood Thompson’s customer service. $35 per person for a three course dinner including fried oysters with Brie, Lemon Beurre Blanc & Sauteed Spinach for the first course, Duck Leg Gallontine as the second course, and Cochon du Lait as the third course.  The selected menu is prepared by executive chef, Josh Wood and features products from Ellwood Thompson, Richmond’s locally owned natural food market in Carytown.  Advance tickets are required, but there just may be a seat or two left……Hurry on over!

The Richmond Ballet is bringing the acclaimed ballet, Giselle, to Richmond’s historic Carpenter Theatre at CenterStage February 11th through February 13th, 2011.

Giselle, one of the great Romantic ballets, was conceived by the influential French poet, author, critic and possibly the greatest champion of the Romantic ballet, Théophile Gautier.  Giselle was created to honor the ballerina Carlotta Grisi, whom Gautier not only admired for her dancing, but with whom he was in love. The ballet was first performed in June 1841 at the Paris Opera and was a success on many levels – even inspiring a style of hat and a type of fabric.
