Modlin Center for Arts Announces Season

A diverse range of shows are scheduled for the Modlin Center at the University of Richmond for its 2011/12 season. Every artistic genre is represented from ballet, jazz, even comedy, puppets, and European-style circus acts. Many of the performances are sponsored by the music, theater and dance departments of the University of Richmond which are housed in the Modlin Center – and, are free.  Most however have an admission fee, particularly performances by folk rock legend Joan Baez and legendary artist Arlo Guthrie.

Season subscriptions are on sale now; check out Modlin Center for a complete list of artists and their venues. Tickets for individual shows go on sale on Monday August 8. Some shows will take place at the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond’s CenerStage in downtown Richmond, other University of Richmond campus venues include Camp Concert Hall, Alice Jepson Theatre and Cousins Studio Theatre.  Most performances are veining performances, though there will be a few matinees.

The Modlin Center for the Arts, which opened in 1996, features state-of-the-art performance venues, galleries, studios, and classrooms. Praised as “a work of art itself” by the Richmond Times-Dispatch,the $22.5 million, 165,000-square-foot facility is home to the departments of art and art history, music and theatre, and dance.

The Modlin Center for the Arts presents more than 40 world-class performing arts events as part of the ModlinArts Presents Series, five productions presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance and the University Players and Dancers, and another 23 music performances as part of the Department of Music’s annual free concert series. Many of the events presented at the Modlin Center feature an academic component designed specifically for Richmond students. These activities, which are free and open to the public, include master classes and lecture demonstrations, as well as pre-concert and exhibition lectures.

The season opens September 7 with La Excelencia, Salsa Dura and performances are scheduled throughout the academic year with the final performances scheduled in May.  If you plan on visiting Richmond, don’t forget to check the schedule and catch a little bit of culture provided by the University of Richmond!
